What is an MRN?

The Movement Reference Number (MRN) is an 18 digit customs identification made up of both numbers and letters. This ID is created each time a declaration is submitted for importing or exporting goods. It is the main reference for customs declaration and the most important link to your export goods.

Who needs one?

The number is used by anyone importing or exporting to identify their goods, whether it be the trader themselves or a customs agent on their behalf.

How do I get one?

The MRN number is automatically and electronically allocated by  the Automated Entry Processing (AEP) (the system that handles the validation, processing, duty accounting and clearance of customs declarations) when it receives and validates the export declaration. Similarly, for the import declarations the MRN is allocated by the Automated Import System (AIS).
